Mike Haines
Mike Haines, a Principal with StrategicFit, is a chemical engineer with 34 years of international experience with Shell companies. His work has spanned petrochemicals and exploration and production. After working with Shell, Mike spent the last decade building up extensive experience in Carbon Capture and Storage technologies in his work for the International Energy Agency Green House Gas R&D Programme.
Mike’s early career included design and operation of heavy petrochemical plants. He then switched to the upstream business where he engineered exploration and production oil and gas projects including applications of advanced enhanced oil recovery methods. He returned to a head office role in process technology for Exploration and Production and finished his Shell career in the development of new greenhouse gas emission reduction technologies.
Mike has expertise in process technology, project management and HSE. His key positions in recent years have been:
• Head of Safety, Environment and Security with Sarawak Shell Berhad
• Head of Design Engineering, Sarawak Shell Berhad
• Senior Process Technologist – Shell Exploration and Production The Hague/Rijswijk
• Project Manager – IEAGHG R&D programme
During his years in Shell Head office Mike led many audits and design reviews of Shell’s major projects and operations around the world.
At IEAGHG he has managed twenty studies on all aspects of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and was closely involved in the successful CO2SINK demonstration of CO2 storage project in Germany.
Mike has particular expertise in the design, operational and economic aspects of industrial development with a focus on CCS.
Mike holds an MA in Chemical Engineering from Cambridge University and speaks English and Dutch.
